Shanghai City Bus

Thanks to its booming economy, Shanghai has a well developed city transportation system, but public buses still play a prominent role among the multiple means of transport in Shanghai for its low price and widely-distributed stops. At present, there are over 1,000 bus routes with tens of thousands of buses carrying about 65% of the passengers in the city daily. Major Bus distributing centers includes all of the railway stations, People’s Square, Lujiazui, Shanghai Stadium, Xujiahui, Zhongshan Park, Wujiaochang and Luxun Park. 

 Run-time: Most of the buses in the city start to run around 04:30 to 05:30 and stop between 23:00 and 24:00. The night buses are in operation from 24:00 to about 04:00 of the next morning. 

 Ticket:
A. The ticket of the buses running in the downtown areas is CNY 1 per person for the bus lines within 13 kilometers (8 miles) long, CNY 1.5 for those over 13 kilometers, and CNY 2 for all of the air-conditioned buses running on any route.
B. The ticket of the suburban lines and special lines are charged according to the distance traveled with a minimum charge of CNY1. 

 Tips for taking a bus in Shanghai: Passengers are advised to take some loose change for the buses without a conductor. Transport IC card can be used on most of the buses, but passengers taking the buses charged by distance have to touch the card to the reader machine when embark on the bus and then again when disembark from the bus.
