Being the second highest tower of Shanghai (The first is Shanghai World Financial Center), Jinmao Tower is a modern skyscraper located in the golden section of Lujiazui Financial and Trade Area in Pudong, with the Huangpu River and the Bund to the west and the large Central Grassland to the north. It is also known as the third highest tower in China and the eighth  highest in the world. The tower perfectly incorporates the traditional Chinese and cutting-edge modern architecture and has become one of the city's landmarks.

The main building of the tower is 420.5 m (1,380 ft) high, with 88 stories. It contains spacious offices, the Grand Hyatt Hotel Shanghai and the Sightseeing Hall. The Grand Hyatt Hotel Shanghai, located on floors 53-87, is the highest superior five-star hotel in the world. The hotel boasts a unique patio from the 56th floor, with a height of 152 m (499 ft). It is decorated with fantastic layers of circular light passages, known as the 'cosmic tunnel'. The Sightseeing Hall, located on the top floor, is the highest and largest of its kind in China at present. The hall offers breathtaking views of the Huangpu River, the Yangtze River and the rest of the city. The view of the Bund is also particularly incredible from here.

The Tower also has a skirt building (subsidiary building) of six stories and an underground building of three stories. The skirt building offers conference and banqueting facilities and shopping and entertainment services. The underground building houses the area's parking lots.

The Tower has 79 elevators in all which are used separately. The elevator waiting room for the office section is built in the shape of Pyramid. The elevator used in this section has an advanced self-help function, that is, when one elevator fails to work midway, another one nearby will arrive within seconds and open automatically for the passengers. There are two direct elevators running between the first underground floor and the top Sightseeing Hall, taking only 45 seconds.
